BFC Community Garden
Did you know that the Barrhaven Food Cupboard also maintains a community garden?! Our goal is to produce nutrient dense, pesticide-free fresh vegetables for our clients. Approximately 30 volunteers plant, maintain and harvest the garden.
Pete’s Garden
The Garden was named in honour of Peter Oegema. A founding member of the Barrhaven Food Cupboard, Peter led and did most of the work with the Garden with the help from his close friend John Scholman. He dug up beds, made timber frames for these new beds, and fenced them to slow down the groundhog and rabbit feasts. He was kind and always working.
Garden Facts
- Permaculture: We practice permaculture and organic gardening to help capture greenhouse gases in the soil and reduce our carbon footprint.
- Affordability: One of the focuses of the Garden is on expensive produce items, such as peppers and garlic, items our clients might not be able to afford at the grocery store.
- Compost: We compost, spread fall leaves on the beds, and use natural (and safe) pest deterrent.
- Pollinator Beds: We have also established pollinator beds around the perimeter. Pollinators are essential for plants to produce the delicious fruits and vegetables we all enjoy.
